Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
