The UK and US have agreed to a key commercial pact that will preserve no tariffs on British drug products going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to increase expenditure on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This commitment secures that import taxes on these crucial goods will remain at nothing for a period of 36 months.

This deal comes after earlier warnings to hike duties on patented drug imports, with figures discussed up to one hundred percent.

"This deal with the UK reinforces the global environment for innovative medicines and establishes long-overdue equity to American-British drug exports," an announcement declared.

Commercial Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the UK's largest exports to the United States, which is by far the largest market for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics indicate that in the year to the end of September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount represented a significant portion of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee secures employment, increases capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for medical research," a government official commented.

Detailed NHS Changes

The pact entails several key commitments from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the cost ceiling at which it considers new treatments to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to double total NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The sum drug companies must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be capped at 15%. Previously, repayments exceeded twenty percent.

Industry Background

The deal comes amid a long-running row between the drug companies and the British authorities over spending levels and approval rates.

The disagreement were heightened by claims that US consumers were charged a premium for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while major expansions have been announced toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a proportion of its resources over the last ten years.
