Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
