Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
