Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
